Drawing, to me, is not only a technical skill, but a way of thinking — how I observe, analyse, and organise the world visually.

From messy sketches to sudden sparks — I chase feeling, not perfection. Drawing confuses me. But it also dares me to think deeper. Photography gives glimpses. Art? It’s the long, hard road I keep choosing.

About Me

I'm Yihan, a Secondary 4 student at Bukit Panjang Government High School, currently in the AEP (Art Elective Programme).

Sometimes I wonder if I should keep going. Words feel too dry for what I think art should be. But somehow, drawing keeps pulling me back — even when it's confusing. I’m drawn to the strange parts of films, the quiet scenes people skip. My dad says I’m trying to run before I learn to walk. Maybe he’s right. But I think what we don’t understand is often what moves us the most.

Art feels like philosophy sometimes — too vast, too deep. But I want to see more. Think more. Walk further.

From Observation to Expression

Using my photographs as references, I created a series of sketches to study the forms, proportions and characteristics of the birds. I then developed these observations into paintings, exploring colour, texture and composition. This project allowed me to transform real-life observations into more personal and expressive artworks.

For this AEP spread, I explored a variety of mediums including oil pastel, charcoal, mixed media, and photography. I wanted to understand how different materials could create different visual effects and communicate ideas in unique ways. Through still life studies, artist-inspired works, observational drawings, and photography, I experimented with both realistic and expressive approaches to art.

For this project, I started by looking at the theme of the four seasons and using nature as my main source of inspiration. I created a mood board with images of spring, autumn, and winter landscapes to explore different colours, moods, and natural forms.

In 2024, I visited my mum’s hometown in Zhejiang and went to the mountain countryside with my uncle.
I saw these two utility poles surrounded by fog, with the power lines disappearing into the distance.
Growing up in Singapore, I had never seen such beautiful mist, so I captured this quiet moment.

‘I took this photo in a small seaside hotel in Japan while travelling with my mum.
