Vertical Memories

An observational ink drawing that explores the layered complexity of urban architecture through perspective, structure, and linework.

Using black ink and expressive mark-making, this piece captures the density and interconnected nature of city environments while emphasizing spatial depth and architectural rhythm.

The challenge

One of the biggest challenges was managing the large amount of visual information within the scene. The architecture contained numerous overlapping structures, staircases, windows, and mechanical elements, making it difficult to maintain clarity while preserving the feeling of urban density. I also found it challenging to balance loose expressive sketching with accurate structural construction, as too much detail could make the drawing appear cluttered while too little would lose the character of the environment.

The solution

To overcome this challenge, I broke the scene down into larger structural forms before gradually adding smaller architectural details. I focused on establishing the primary perspective lines and major shapes first, allowing the composition to remain readable as complexity increased. Through varied line weights, selective hatching, and careful control of visual hierarchy, I was able to separate foreground, middle ground, and background elements while maintaining the energetic quality of the sketch. This process helped me create a drawing that communicates both the density and organization of the urban environment.
