The Shoe That Never Stopped Evolving

I remembered seeing that iconic silhouette in the Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc visuals. It didn’t feel like an expensive performance sneaker. And yet you could recognise it entirely from its shadow. That is why Converse is Converse.‍

What are we actually designing? In the simplest possible words: We are placing the body of a modern basketball shoe, volleyball shoe, walking shoe, rain shoe and light hiking shoe inside the classic Chuck Taylor silhouette. It is like taking a beautiful old car, carefully preserving its body, and quietly installing a completely modern engine, brakes, suspension and safety system underneath. From five metres away, it still looks like a Chuck. When you wear it, everything changes.

The challenge

Putting on an OG Chuck is a small argument.Putting on the X99 takes five seconds.Walking in the OG feels flat and direct.Walking in the X99 feels close to the ground but protected.Playing basketball in the OG feels fast until you land or cut hard.Playing in the X99 feels low, stable, grippy and secure.Rain in the OG means soaked canvas and uncertain traction.Rain in the X99 means dry socks, controlled grip and water rolling off the upper. An old OG looks beautiful but may be physically exhausted. An old X99 looks equally beautiful while its internal parts can be renewed. The OG feels like wearing history. The X99 feels like history finally finished evolving.

The solution

I kept the classic silhouette almost untouched and placed the innovation underneath it: reinforced canvas, concealed rear entry, internal lockdown, layered cushioning and a zoned outsole for courts, wet pavement and trails.

The result is not a futuristic shoe disguised as a Chuck. It is the Chuck Taylor imagined as if it had never stopped evolving.
