Small World, Stop Motion

A handmade stop-motion animation created during the December holidays for an AEP project, using clay, Play-Doh and iPads.

The project explored environmentalism through small handmade characters, physical sets and frame-by-frame animation.

The challenge

The main challenge was controlling movement and consistency. Because everything was made by hand, the clay and Play-Doh figures could shift, deform or fall out of place easily. It also took patience to take many photos just to create a few seconds of animation.

The solution

We worked frame by frame, making small adjustments to the characters and scenes before photographing each movement with the iPad. By using simple handmade materials and careful positioning, we created an animation that communicated the environmental theme through physical storytelling.
